You've probably reached a verdict by now as to whether Tom Vek, the singer songwriter and multi instrumentalist from Essex, is your thing. His off beat, quirky lyrics and lack of obvious choruses have ensured he still remains something of an underground phenomenon, despite being one of the most interesting artists to appear in a long time.
Whatever camp you fall into, however, there's no denying the quality of Nothing But Green Lights, the fifth single to be plundered from his debut album We Have Sound. Here a thick bass line presides over a swirling electronic sample, to create a feel not at all dissimilar to Talking Heads' Once In A Lifetime.
An undoubted highlight of his live set, the exuberance and optimism of the track is fully captured on record - "There's nothing but green lights from here, nothing but empty roads," declares Vek in a typically nonchalant manner, effectively transporting you to the steering wheel of a fast car on an American interstate highway. All in all it's simply more brilliance from one of the country's most exciting new talents.
