Like a pleasant amble in the park on a summer's
day, Turin Brakes' song passes by with a cheery
singalong tune. The first verse sums up their carefree
approach perfectly; "It's a lovely day to
lose your way". Like much of their music, however, a
closer inspection reveals a few hints of discontent
just beneath the surface, like the "nine to five,
slowly eating me alive". We're all with you there.
It's a mystery as to why the duo haven't made a
bigger impact chart-wise, given the quality of much of
their melodic material. After the 2003 success of
Pain Killer they seemed groomed for the big time, but
maybe, because of the lolling nature of their
music, people didn't quite go for it.
Whatever happens, if you miss this single your life won't
be a whole lot worse, but if you choose to go for that
stroll you'll find the sun is shining and the birds
are singing on this piece of radio friendly pop. The
boys deserve better - let's hope they get it.
