For a band that won the US equivalent of the Mercury Music Prize (The
Shortlist Prize) with their debut album, Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty
Babes, TVOTR remain a curiously unknown entity here in the UK. With their
second album, Return From Cookie Mountain, and this, the first single to be
taken from it, the black Radiohead should be firmly establishing
themselves on Britains musical map.
Always challenging and somewhat experimental, Wolf Like Me is about as
close to conventional rock music as TVOTR ever come - hence its
non-surprise single release. But this sure isn't a verse/chorus sing-along:
fevered drums are joined by bludgeoning guitar to create a frighteningly
intense groove that is built up and torn down throughout the course of the
song.
The production is polished and expansive and the depth and passion of the
music is simply extraordinary. For those that enjoy music that pushes the
experimental envelope a little bit, TVOTR are a truly essential band and
Wolf Like Me demonstrably proves that.
