Twisted Wheel are Columbia's big hope for the next few months. If you've been paying attention, you'll have heard people such as Noel Gallagher and, erm, Danny from Embrace casually dropping their name into conversations. Then they suddenly land support slots with Oasis and The View. Why on earth would their record company think that a bunch of gobby Northerners who play raucous guitar anthems would be a success, I wonder?
It's easy to be cynical about Twisted Wheel. After all, it was only a few months ago that The Twang were hailed as the saviours of the music industry, a claim that now seems rather ludicrous. Yet this trio from Oldham definitely have that certain something - a swaggering attitude and genuine belief in what they do. It's that which sets them apart from their contemporaries, epitomised in Johnny Brown's snarling, spitting vocals.
Lucy The Castle is a song you can easily imagine crowd-surfing or moshing to in a packed club. It's full of frantic energy and attitude, reminiscent of early Arctic Monkeys or, yes, those Gallagher brothers. It's too early to judge whether they'll go on to great things, but this is a good start.
