With Zane Lowe and Edith Bowman already backing them, Glasgow-based trio Union Of Knives seem poised for success. Their mix of indie guitars and retro synths may make you sigh "not another one", but there's a touch of magic to this release, which places Dave Mclean, Chris Gordon and Craig Grant ahead of the ever-growing electro-rock pack.
Evil Has Never sees the uncomfortable repetition of; "Nobody has ever loved you" have its impact nullified by the words; "Like I do", but there seems little cause for celebration as a melancholic synthesised buzz and downbeat drums drive ever on. It is Operated On that steals the show, however, starting off like a Poison-era Prodigy track with dirty breakbeats and edgy bass guitar. Sweet, cascading vocals then form a glimmer of light through the gloriously gloomy darkness as the track build and broadens.
There are even echoes of a dance-fuelled U2, but while Union Of Knives won't pose a threat to the world's biggest band, they certainly seem to have enough about them to carve their own niche within an otherwise overcrowded marketplace.
