VV Brown - or Vanessa Brown to her nearest and dearest - is no ordinary young pop starlet signed to a major label with the kind of look that image-makers drool over.
Oh no, she’s been round the musical block already as a writer and backing singer for both The Pussycat Dolls and Sugababes. She also co-writes and co-produces all her songs and, rumour has it, she’s as mad as a box of frogs. In other words, she’s the perfect modern-day pop star.
Crying Blood explodes out of the speakers like a hyperactive child in a Sunny D factory, all OTT vocals and perfectly pitched desperation. Brown has described her sound as ‘doo-wop indie’ and you can hear where she’s coming from, plus there’s a definite ‘60s vibe what with all the cute backing vocals, the hint of rockabilly both musically and stylistically and the fact it sounds unnervingly like a sped-up version of Monster Mash by Bobby 'Boris' Pickett. This is in no way a bad thing. A new star is born and her name is VV Brown.
