The Veils may be a London four-piece but there's a distinct California touch to the sound of Finn Andrews' rough wail - a bit like Neil Young after a particularly heavy night. Backing is of the White Stripes / Strokes genre - simple rhythms, nothing fancy, back-to-basics.

Guiding Light is short, catchy and grows on you, with a repeated chorus of descending chords - "there goes my guiding light..." - and some engaging guitar.

The B-sides are actually more interesting. Need Is Water is a slow, dark ballad that showcases Andrews' singular voice to good effect, and Death & Co. combines the best of both worlds - classic guitars and a great vocal line - in a mini-epic with a distinctly summery feel.
