With storming live performances backing up their critically and commercially successful debut album Hats Off To The Buskers, The View were arguably the most talented indie-rock band to emerge last year.
Unfortunately, 5Rebbecca's is a distinct disappointment. Once more produced by Owen Morris, it impresses neither lyrically nor musically. Apparently about five women named Rebecca - why? - the singer bemoans the fact that "the one I love the most has turned into a junkie". Trouble is, he doesn't sound like he minds that much. And anti-drug lines such "And everyone done the pill/But solvent abuse can kill" are laughably trite.
The music feels rather hackneyed too. After an opening of distorted feedback and crashing drums, comes a familiar-sounding guitar riff owing as much to glam rock as punk, while the chorus makes little impact and the football-terrace-style chanting sounds unconvincing. The misspelling and mispunctuation in the song title is matched by the flawed content. Hopefully there will be stronger material on the rest of the new album, but this track seems as redundant as the apostrophe.
