There was a time when a Vines show was a case study in mental disorder. An increasingly erratic Craig Nicolls was expected to smash three guitars at a time, gargle in tongues and throw turds at the crowd. Thankfully for him, these days he's far more stable. Fortunately, this does not mean that the tunes have descended into a sedated shadow of former, unhinged glory.
Any Sound is two seconds shy of the perfect two minute pop song. With guitars as thick as the supersized shakes that he use to guzzle, Nicolls is still very much immersed in the music. Still, there are worse places to be. It's the sort of big balled, instantly gratifying, effortlessly simple hook that the likes of Jet have been trying to make since they bought their first replica ‘Stones t-shirts.
It's guaranteed to have the kids playing air-spear the guitar through the imaginary P.A whilst the band calmly collect the radio friendly royalties. Controlled chaos, indeed.
