A rumble of thunder, a guitar cutting its way through the mix like a chainsaw steeped in wah-wah - it's metal my friends, of that there is no doubt.

It's possible, that despite the alleged evolution of metal into the likes of Korn, Slipknot and, oh I dunno, Cannibal Corpse, that really it never really needed to evolve in the first place. Could be that the original blueprints had things spot on in the first place, and that every band since 1983 have been nothing but needless hybrids. If that's true, then Voodoo Six are sticking closely to the gospel as it was originally laid down. Twin guitars rule the roost, huge riffs pummel the speakers and the drummer pounds the living crap out of his kit.

Reference points are numerous. Obviously they sound as if they come straight from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, but in places they've got the odd hint of Soundgarden too. In vocalist Henry Rundell they've got something of a secret weapon, no growling incomprehensibly for him, oh no, he's cast in the chest bursting mould of Robert Plant or Chris Cornell.

There is absolutely nothing new about Voodoo Six, but then it's not like they're pretending otherwise. You can only salute their resolve as they continue to make the devil's music the way many would argue it should be made.
