I can see it now, the radio playlist meeting. This one would be the
easiest of the lot for them to appraise - the title makes it a complete
nonstarter. It just goes to show how instantly judgmental these things are,
as the song doesn't explicitly push the use of crack, speed or anything
similar. Rivers Cuomo even says so on the cover, just in case you
doubted.
In fact it seems to me in part an observation that pretty much all of us
are on drugs of some sort. Caffeine, alcohol, aspirin, nicotine - all
everyday stimulants or numbing devices, and while the song doesn't refer to
them specifically the implications are clear. "I want to reach a higher
plane" sings Cuomo in a surprisingly emotive bridge passage. The song is
typical Weezer, musically uncomplicated with a melody not quite out of
their top drawer, but pretty high nonetheless.
You can catch them on tour here soon - and it's a pretty fair bet you
won't need any artificial stimulants to enjoy them. If you choose to go
that way though, make sure you heed the band's warning that "the best of
your days will all vanish in the haze".
