Westlife & Diana Ross - When You Tell Me That You Love Me (BMG)
UK release date: 12 December 2005
Having a go at Westlife is utterly pointless. You can write the most bile-filled review, railing against the utter banality of their music, and the cynicism of dragging in a big name in order to also appeal to the parents of the hoards of teenage girls who would buy this even if it was three minutes of Kian and company farting into a paper bag.
Yes, it would be pointless to have a go at Westlife. But what the hell, it's quite fun anyway, so let's do our best shall we? For When You Tell Me That You Love Me is utterly appalling. The four lads take their usual stool-bound position to robotically croon the old standard, while Diana Ross is wheeled out to phone in her lines. It's possibly the dullest four minutes of music recorded this year and it's all shot through without any passion or excitement.
Yet, being Westlife, this will inexplicably sell millions of copies and Louis Walsh will laugh all the way to the bank. All these cover versions are getting predictable though chaps - next time, how about tackling something a bit more unusual...I can see it now - Westlife tackle the work of the Dead Kennedys...come on lads, you know it makes sense...
