If you're lucky, you might just catch the end of Whirlwind Heat's current UK tour, but in the meantime you can check out four new tracks from the Jack White and Brendan Benson sponsored Michigan trio on the Reagan EP, which jumps around between the playful pop-punk of book end tracks Reagan and its reprise I Fucked Up Reagan, and the funkier Macho Man and Memory. The final two track act as a mirror to the first, making this arguably (gulp!) a concept EP.
The playful irony that runs throughout the lyrics is reminiscent of Terry Hall in places, and the tom-tom drumming throughout the second and third tracks also harks back more to an '80s two-tone tradition than the Detroit garage punk with which Whirlwind Heat are generally identified.
There's echoes of the White Stripes at their more playful, such as Little Room and We're Going To Be Friends, in Reagan's tale of betrayed love, which should give you plenty of reasons to check out the band who have been wowing audiences as SXSW as well as supporting the White Stripes in Japan and Australia.
