Miles Winter Roberts has an intriguing backstory - so fanciful that you actually start wondering whether it's a wind-up. The story goes that he was discovered castaway on a desert island, after months of being feared drowned. During his exile, he wrote a load of songs, the first batch of which turn up on this EP.
Whether it's a true story or not, it's a shame that Roberts' music isn't as interesting. Like James Blunt, his songs are perfectly constructed and expertly played, but there's no excitement or passion to be found here. The bossa-nova flavour of opening track Sha La La La In My Life is infectious, but also intensely annoying, while Roberts' voice on the turgid Special Certain Something is almost as irritating as that of Blunt's.
The more straightforward acoustic pop of Head In Your Cloud works better, but again it's nothing you won't have heard a million times before. while Every Time You Kiss is pedestrian and plodding. Sorry Mr Roberts, but that desert island didn't sound particularly inspiring.
