Without Gravity - Beautiful Son (One Little Indian)
UK release date: 2 May 2005
What is it about Iceland that produces such beautifully melancholic music? Sigur Ros have the ability to send shivers down the nearest spine by just singing in a made up language, Múm are similarly quiet and offbeat while Emiliana Torrini's recent album is also suitably whispy and lovelorn.
Now we have Reykjavik quartet Without Gravity with their debut single Beautiful Son, and it's another fragile offering. Vocalist Kali has the requisite amount of yearning in his voice to make sound like a spiritual successor to Jeff Buckley and the gently brushed acoustic guitars make the song sound gorgeously heartbreaking.
The back up track While This River Flows is almost as good if a bit more upbeat - if the rest of the band's debut album Tenderfoot is as accessible as this, expect them to raise the profile of Icelandic music to a whole new level.
