The latest release on the ever-decent Rough Trade sees Libertine Pete Doherty join forces with his old friend Wolfman.

For Lovers is beautiful, and it may be with some surprise that Libertines fans see Doherty's voice take an all-together more considered, and sweet approach to the song, away from their usual lovably feral territory. The soft splendour of his voice melts around a backdrop of soft strings, piano, and a slightly jazzed-up, dinner party rhythm. The lusciousness of this song is somehow reminiscent of Silent Sigh by Badly Drawn Boy.

For Lovers is genuine, hopeful, and lovely in a totally non "pappy" way, avoiding the usual tired sentiments of love that bombard the charts (yes, I'm looking at you Blue). This is an easily lovable radio-friendly triumph - a modern day classic pop song deserving of the Number One spot.
