The Wombats have the happy knack of managing to create witty, radio-friendly songs without ever coming across as bland or too twee. Last year's Moving To New York was one of the great singles of 2006, and Backfire At The Disco continues their tradition of excellence.
Matthew Murphy's bittersweet tale of a date that goes horribly wrong at - you guessed it - the disco is propelled along by some marvellous 'woo-hoo' harmony backing vocals and a chorus that gnaws itself into your brain like some kind of tropical disease. Lines such as "it's 3am and I'm feeling shite, I'm going home alone tonight" only add to the pathos of it all.
Three superb singles in a row from The Wombats then - the forthcoming debut album should be something to keep an eye upon.
