The Wombats - Let's Dance To Joy Division (14th Floor)
UK release date: 15 October 2007
Oooh those clever little Wombats, waiting till October to release a song with the words 'Joy Division' in the title, just as the Ian Curtis biopic Control is opening in the nation's cinemas. Yet cynical marketing ploys aside, this should be the record that - finally - provides the Scouse trio with their long awaited commercial breakthrough.
We've all seen them, those 'alternative' types who stand frostily at the side of the dancefloor until Hand In Glove or Love Will Tear Us Apart bursts out of the speakers. Then they pirouette onto the dancefloor, waving imaginary bunches of gladioli about before they leave on their own, go home, cry and want to die. Hell, some of us were them for quite a while.
The Wombats and Joy Division are miles apart musically - indeed, you can imagine all the Joy Division fans absolutely hating this - but the trio have a happy knack for writing cracking little pop songs. Let's Dance... is probably their best yet, witty, clever and incredibly catchy. It powers along beautifully, and there's something clever in the lyrics each time you listen to it (in this case, a children's choir breaking into "let love tear us apart").
After a string of excellent singles, this should be the one that turns The Wombats into household names.
