Xavier Floyd Firebird has yet to release anything, and already they’re creating something of a stir, which can mean one of two things. Firstly, that they have a great PR team behind them and their debut single could be the most turgid of offerings and still be massive. Or secondly (and thankfully this seems to be the case), that they’ve created a single that seems more than worthy of praise.

Boss Man You Scare Me is an assured debut, the title track setting the listener up for a trip through reworked New Wave riffs and production. Danny Floyd’s voice strains almost uncomfortably as he hollers "I'm hunted", but because his delivery is fragile and unsure of itself, it works perfectly alongside the strangulated guitars and driving drums. If anything, Boss Man... sounds at times like it’s trying a little too hard to impress.

On the B-sides Danny Floyd sounds infinitely more assured and impassioned as the single goes on. It’s not a million miles away from those fantastic early Idlewild singles, and it would be worth a bet that they wrote and recorded each song in order, becoming more adept at songwriting and recording as they went along. If that’s the case, then the album’s going to be a stormer, and you could be a fiver to the good.
