It's now nearly 18 months since the Yeah Yeah Yeahs released their debut album Fever To Tell, yet they're still releasing singles from it. The words flogging, dead and horse would come to mind, except Y Control is one of the album's best tracks so it's easier to be sympathetic. Still, I can't really see why they're bothering. Anyone who likes the Yeahs will presumably already have the album and I doubt anyone not yet convinced isn't going to have their mind changed by this.
It's what you might consider as a pretty typical Yeah Yeah Yeahs song. Somewhere between the unhinged Date With The Night and the delicate Maps, it's built from Nick Zinner's feedback drenched, angular guitar loops swooping in and out of Brian Chase's deceptively complex drumming with NYC's colossus of cool Ms. Karen O bestriding it all, shrieking-and-a-hollering like the rock'n'roll star she most definitely is.
And it's good. Really good. And maybe I'm misjudging it; maybe this is the track to send the YYY's stratospheric. So buy it in droves and prove me wrong. That's as noble a cause as you're likely to find today.
