A live favourite for well over a year, She's Attracted to has thankfully finally made it on to CD. The Young Knives' peculiar stories certainly have a way of worming their way into your head, and this is no different. Once it gets in there, this one will never leave.
She's Attracted To lays bare a nightmare of Meet the Parents proportions. If Ben Stiller thought he had it bad with De Niro though, then that's nothing to the hell that vocalist/guitarist Henry Dartnall finds himself in. Mind you, "Who are these people? They are too stupid to be your real parents" is probably not the best opening gambit when meeting your girlfriend's folks. Things disintegrate as the song develops, as the meeting heads towards epic violence by security light. Not so good for poor old Henry, but great for us, as it provides us with the stupendous line "You were screaming at your mum, and I was punching your dad". Domestic violence has never sounded so appealing.
As usual, all the Young Knives elements are in place. A wonderfully solid bass line propels the whole thing along, and guitars are whipped straight from the world of Wire. Then of course there's the off kilter lyrics of The Young Knives delivered in the brothers Dartnell's weirdly yelped manner. If you haven't discovered the coolest band of the year yet, then you need to seek this out.
