Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Hurrah! Another Year... (Fierce Panda)
UK release date: 16 August 2004
The band name is a bit of a tongue twister isn't it? It also seems to be
missing the abbreviation PLC on the end. But I assure you we're not taking
the mickey with the 13 word title of this mini-album. If there's one thing this young
Wycombe quartet may be remembered for it is lengthiness. That, and a
seemingly in-built compulsion to graze their strings and snap-dribble the
percussion - a trait found on virtually every screamo-emo record.
But Hurrah! is nothing of the sort. On the contrary, YMSS are a curious
bunch. Art-metal has been the label pegged on them, which is a rather
lazy one, but on the whole it's correct. The epic nine minutes of standout opener
The Pitch And Yaw of Satellites transpire to be a remarkable exercise in
jazz-core, with delicate branches into space rock amid intermittent thrashes
and blasts.
Indeed throughout its four-song, 31-minute entirety, Hurrah! is an
ambitious collection of songs from a band shoe-gazing on a steady path to
commercial breakthrough. One feels they still have quite a way to go
however.
