A zero point field, fact fans, is a term in quantum physics to describe empty space, or, if you prefer, the space in a vacuum. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle states that no quantum objects are ever entirely at rest - they oscillate at the tiniest physical (quantum) level. Even in a vacuum, where everything else has, in effect, been removed, there remain electromagnetic waves which possess the smallest amount of energy possible - the "zero point".
Collect these oscillating elements together and you actually end up with quite a lot of energy - and this constantly moving "sea of light" is what is referred to as the zero-point field. In effect, the zero-point field is a quantum physicist's description of what the lay person might refer to as "nothing".
Zero Point Field is also the name of a new heavy metal band from Oxford whose debut single combines what might be history's most boring guitar riff with its least interesting melody to produce a poor man's version of Ozzy Osbourne. What it lacks in satanic references, however, it more than makes up with in lyrical clichés, non-sequiturs and ellipses - ironically, nothing new, despite the claims of its title. It's slightly less exciting than quantum physics, and, coincidentally, amounts to a whole lot of nothing. Points out of ten? Etc.
