It's time to rock out with the Beta Band and their helter-skelter single Out-Side. Turbulent guitars and tribal drums predominate among quirky samples of dogs, birds, trains and rain noises, all on cue to fit in with relevant lyrics as though it were a radio play. Where were the coconuts emulating a mule's clippety-clop?
Rising from this treasure-chest of sounds comes the ascending and euphoric "I love your way", sung slowly in singer Steve Mason's ever-plaintive voice. Then follow more rocking beats and even a frenzied electronic interlude. This blinding second single from Heroes to Zeroes exemplifies a move to the mainstream for the Betas, but happily they retain their quirky creativity.
I wasn't too bothered with the single's two remixes. The first a stripped-down version peppered with mellow robotic beats. The second a mish-mash of anything the band could find in the cupboard. Stick with the original and turn up that volume.
