The Killers - Mr Brightside (Lizard King)
release date: 24 May 2004
The Killers - Mr Brightside

The Killers from Las Vegas thankfully haven't brought any garish bling bling with them, instead producing some chic pop punk tightly zipped in a black leather jacket.

Single Mr Brightside, off forthcoming debut album Hot Stuff, is a cool, aching lament on stomach-churning jealousy. It's clear the band have late '70s Brit New Wave influences, using mournful pop melodies injected with an adrenalin buzz that rise above energetic two-beat drumming, emo guitar riffs and low robotic synths.

Singer Brandon Flowers' voice is like that of a lesser-trained Matt Bellamy (Muse), not quite reaching the dizzy heights of melodrama but convincingly impassioned. His meek, drawn-out "I never", sung at the end of a fizz of guitars and drums, is a little twee but nonetheless finishes off a superb track.
