The Ordinary Boys - Seaside (B-Unique)
UK release date: 20 September 2004
The Ordinary Boys - Seaside
Okay, so The Ordinary Boys have taken their name from a Morrissey song, but on hearing their latest single Seaside I felt like I was also listening to a starstruck Mozza fan on Stars In Their Eyes. It's all a bit too much homage-paying for me.

Singer Preston unashamedly tries to be a Morrissey soundalike and ends up reminding me that the real thing is far better. On the plus side, the single is charmingly rose-tinted with its clamouring for weekend fun by the seaside and has an uplifting beat-studded melody. The big band brass section also makes it a full-bodied song.

But fundamentally these guys can't claim their own sound because it's been siphoned off. Morrissey himself may approve and support them to the point of inviting them to perform at his Meltdown Festival in London, but that's quite a paternal stance he's taking. For me, the band are just far too obvious.
