The Others' first single, This Is For The Poor, is one of the best tracks of the year so far. Something akin to The Sex Pistols ritually sacrificing Franz Ferdinand, it's the kind of vitriolic call to arms which makes music a lot more interesting.
Stan Bowles, named after a QPR footballer from the 70's, is cut from a similar cloth. Ramshackle, punky guitars, garden-shed production and an impossibly characteristic vocalist who can't really sing (but it doesn't really matter), it embraces the do-it-yourself aesthetic that The Libertines have come to represent and that any number of new British bands are adopting.
I love it. The guerrilla gigging the band have popularised, the all-attitude, low-tech approach, everything about it makes it music to incite, to cause revolutions and to shake up the status quo. The Others make me want to quit my job, burn all my material possessions, move to London and start a band. And they'll make you want to too. Now, where did I put my guitar...
