Hooray! The '80s are now officially back in musical vogue. The Human League are on tour again and Robbie Williams, that great yard-stick of what's hot, has released a single tinged with dark electro-studded beats reminiscent of songs from 20 years ago.
In a radical shift from his sing-a-long melodic pop, Williams follows in the footsteps of The Departure in their revival of eighties new wave music. Radio is a macabre track with soaring synths and dark vocals that evoke men with black eye-liner and long-fringed spiky haircuts. The melody is catchy and smacks of high drama.
The single does a superb job of sounding vintage and although treading on the well-beaten track, it's a welcome and refreshing musical development for Williams. Now where did I put that white frilly shirt?
