They may look and sound like they've just stepped out of the '70s, but the Followill family are able, when willing, to produce some of the best rock music you'll hear anywhere. Recent album Aha Shake Heartbreak was packed with highlights, and Four Kicks is just one of them.
In just over two minutes, the Kings lay down a driving garage rhythm while Caleb Followhill yelps about switchblades, guns from the south and even cockfights. It's all a bit dark and menacing and it's impossible to sit still while you're listening to it. It's just a shame it doesn't last a bit longer, but that's better than overstaying its welcome.
Incidentally, the CD single features the extraordinary video for Four Kicks which, with its stop-start photography and random violence, is worth the price of the disc on its own.
