There's no point beating about the bush here. From Coldplay's X & Y, the UK's fastest selling album of the 21st century, comes the second single Fix You. And it just happens to be the best song on the album.

But in these strange days, being the biggest band on Earth, with a front man married to a Hollywood A-lister, headlining Glasto and Live 8 and having a great song from an overwhelmingly popular and ubiquitous LP is no guarantee of a number 1 hit - finally - for those terribly polite UCL boys.

Why? Well, you may remember that Speed Of Sound, the first X & Y single, was infamously prevented from reaching the top of the pile by a thing known as Crazy Frog that said "bing bing bing bing bing bing" while riding an imaginary bike.

Fix You begins quietly with Chris Martin's emotive voice over church organ before ramping up with infectious drums and U2-esque guitar.

It is, essentially, a superbly well-written and rousing hymn and even the radio edit version lays claim for the song that'll stick in your head longest this year. That is, unless your taste in music extends only as far as shower-capped amphibians...
