The Tommys - The Day The World Turned Chav (Playground)
UK release date: 3 October 2005
There's been a bit of a buzz around The Tommys for a while now, as they've been lumped in with bands like The Faders, on account of the fact that they're all female, look a bit punky, and play guitars. But don't make the mistake of calling them 'the female Busted' as some people have done.
For there's nothing remotely poppy about debut, download-only, single The Day The World Turned Chav. In fact, it's bands like Green Day that spring to mind more readily - loud, angry guitar chords, vicious lyrics about everyone's favourite Burburry clad underclass and a chorus so catchy that you can't help but sing along to it.
At an average age of 17, they sound as young and as fiesty as only a bunch of teenagers can. The danger with putting a buzzword like 'chav' in your song title is that it could all sound dreadfully dated in a few years time, but musically this is pretty much timeless stuff. A British answer to The Donnas? It's about time.
