One of the most promising British guitar acts of 2005 kick of the New Year with another re-released single - this time it's Munich which gets the repackaging treatment, and arrives at a time when its creators are sitting pretty at the top of the tree both critically and commercially in the UK. To try and reaffirm this, they've chosen to re-plug what is arguably their finest moment.
This decision is a curious one, given its ubiquity throughout 2005, and the fact that Editors' sublime debut album The Back Room is hardly short of potential hits - Lights, All Sparks, Camera and Open Your Arms are just some of the tracks deserving of a wider forum.
Nevertheless, Munich remains the quintessential Editors song - fast paced, full of intricate, piercing guitar sounds, powerful drumming, thought provoking lyrics and Tom Smith's chilling baritone delivery. Rather like Interpol in double time, it's a thrilling piece of music that loses none of its edge with repeated listens. And if it seduces any number of new fans to the album and their live shows, I suppose we shouldn't grumble.
