Kanye West has already been responsible for one classic moment of TV this year, when he left Mike Myers dumbstruck by going wildy off-script in a charity telethon to state that "George W Bush doesn't care about black people". He goes one step further here, with the line "I know the Government administers AIDS".
It's the sort of thing you may expect to hear from a bewildered looking man wearing a hat made out of tin foil, but West wraps it all up in the sweetest of soul sounds. It may not have the jaw-dropping effect of previous singles Golddigger or Diamonds From Sierra Leone, but West's intelligent, articulate lyrics and a typically classy production make this a superior slice of hip-hop.
Also, Adam Levine's vocal contribution means that he manages to at last appear on something half-decent, which after a career fronting Maroon 5 must make a nice change...
