It really doesn't matter that the lyrics to Wicked Soul describe a pedestrian love affair and aren't especially poignant, or that the driving piano/guitar rhythm that holds the song together sounds suspiciously like it belongs to a Hard-Fi record. This is, first and foremost, epic pop stuffed chock full of hooks with a rousing, singalong chorus.
Wicked Soul is Kubb's third single from debut album Mother, produced by Youth, which follows a week later. Releasing a debut album so close to Christmas could well make or break Harry Collier's merry men.
The quirky Somebody Else and spiky Remain, the band's first two singles, didn't exactly set fire to the top 40. But Kubb deserve their break. Here's hoping they don't drown amongst the heavyweight seasonal competition.
