The American quartet best known for their only previous UK hit Get Over It, OK Go are finally releasing a follow-up single. Record label mix ups and misunderstandings have kept them off the radar for far too long, but with the help of the internet and a goofy video, they're back.
A Million Ways was never really intended to be a single, and listening to it you can tell. It's a good, quirky little pop tune, but does it have 'hit' written all over it? No, not really. It's a cutesy little pop tune with a slightly sinister edge, carried by Damian Kulash's effortlessly convincing vocals and held together with backing vocals that go; "One zero zero zero zero zero...". Like Weezer, they're a little bit geeky in that endearing way. They've got plenty of hits up their sleeves, but when a video of the four band members performing a choreographed dance routine in Damian's backyard appeared on the internet, the strange decision to release this song as a single was pretty much made for them.
The video was supposed to be a little joke between friends and family, and something of a rehearsal for using the routine in their live sets. Previously on tour, they'd perform a similar routine to C-c-cinnamon Lips from their first album, so for the fans there didn't really seem anything strange about four grown men, smartly dressed, dancing like a budget boyband. But to the outside world? Well, it was downloaded a few million times online within a couple of months, and it even got them on the ITV news. It might not sound like a hit, but it jolly well looks like one.
