One of the new breed of bands who, like label mates Panic! At The Disco, specialise in furiously paced, yet immensely catchy, guitar pop songs, this Chicago-based band have been taken under the wing of Fall Out Boy, and threaten to become very big news indeed this year.
Nobody's going to accuse The Academy Is... of being overtly original, but it can't be denied that Slow Down is a fine little pop song. It's hugely melodic, yet also furiously urgent, and also has a winning line of "you kiss like me like an over-dramatic actor who's starving for work" which is, quite frankly, a marvellous lyric. Yes it sticks to the 'slow-fast-slow' template, and it's not remotely 'punk-rock' at all, but unless you're deeply cynical, you'll be very impressed.
With a sold-out tour on the horizon, The Academy Is... will be the perfect band to liven up this year's raft of summer festivals. Get into them now before the little kids claim them as their own.
