Bella Union have snapped up Ballet School, who also count Grimes among their fans. The Berlin-based trio blend irresistible pop hooks with twisted electronics; put short, this is alt-pop done the way it should be.
The story goes that singer Rosie Blair and guitarist Michel Collet met two years ago in Berlin’s thriving ex-pat DIY scene. Rosie heard Michel playing his guitar in the U-bahn and immediately asked him to form a band.
In 2012 they began collaborating with Louis, another fixture on the Berlin DIY scene, and started to rework their life long loves, The Cure, Cocteau Twins and early Madonna, into a fresh sound. The result is distinctly ’80s, with glacial guitars and perfectly pitched vocals that sing of all the important stuff; kissing, lust, longing and friendship.
Ballet School sound like a thousand Molly Ringwald movies rolled into one, and they’re thrilling for it. Their EP, Boys Again, was released a couple of months ago, and with an album on the horizon, we hope they’ll be totting up the air miles heading over to our shores in 2014.
