musicOMH’s 2020 Classical Advent Calendar Day 12:
Waldteufel’s ‘Les Patineurs Valse’

Day 12 of our Countdown to Christmas continues with a classic waltz.

Although New Year is really the season for waltzing, Émile Waldteufel’s Les Patineurs (The Skaters’ Waltz) is such a trope of Christmas films that it would be a crime not to include it as a ‘lollipop’ in a musical Advent Calendar; besides, Waldteufel is another of our seasonal birthday boys – born in December 1837.

Written in 1882, this fully formed Viennese waltz portrays a winter scene at the skating rink in the Bois de Boulogne.

Those of us with some keyboard skills may remember hacking through a piano version of the piece at family Christmas gatherings, but here it is in its full frou-frou orchestral version.
