A bit of whimsy gets us closer to Christmas. Door 21: Open Sesame.
There’s nothing quite like a novelty comedy song at Christmastide, and there have been a few over the years. Randy Brooks’ Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer is older than you think, and dates from 1979.
The original recording from this year, by Elmo and Patsy Trigg Shropshire, knocked Bing Crosby off the top spot in the USA, presumably both delighting and appalling everyone with its Country ‘n’ Western irreverence, and bursting the cutesy family values bubble. Indeed, the video that accompanies this performance is quite dark.
For our performance of this, we’ve picked the a cappella group Home Free, who specialise in close harmony versions of country music classics (their version of the Johnny Cash hit Ring of Fire, featuring Avi Kaplan – formerly of Pentatonix – is definitely not to be missed).
