Squid, Black Country, New Road & Daniel O’Sullivan… This Week In Gigs

Squid play the 100 Club on Thursday.

Two of the most hotly-tipped new bands hit London this week alongside some more familiar, bigger names.

Squid may have only just released a few singles and an EP but they’ve already attracted their fair share of attention, being compared to the likes of Talking Heads, Television an LCD Soundsystem. They play the 100 Club on Thursday. Listen to the jerky, new wave Match Bet here:

Later in the week on Saturday the same venue hosts Black Country, New Road. They’re another band to have only released a few singles so far but they’ve already gained a reputation for exciting live shows. Listen to new single Sunglasses here:

Elswehere, Gazelle Twin gives last year’s excellent Pastoral album a final live outing on Friday at Mirth, Marvel and Maud in Walthamstow and on the same night Daniel O’Sullivan appears at the Lexington with support from Brigid Mae Power. Listen to O’Sullivan’s latest single The Diamond Vehicle here:

We don’t really talk too much about the Proms in this column (we prefer to leave that to our classical section) but it’s worth noting that on Tuesday Jonny Greenwood will be appearing at the late night Prom at the Royal Albert Hall, playing his Three Miniatures from Water – No. 3 and Horror vacui – for solo violin and 68 strings and other pieces with help from BBC Proms Youth Ensemble and BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Other stand out shows this week include Aphex Twin playing a rare show at Printworks on Saturday, respected British jazz outfit Empirical playing the Purcell Room on Wednesday and avant-electronicist Objekt appearing at Islington Assembly Hall on Thursday.
