London Gigs: 15-21 February 2016

Gigs Of The Week

When Julia Holter released fourth LP, Have You In My Wilderness, last year, it’s fair to say we were smitten. Full of characters playing out fascinating tales, with subtle electronics and lush orchestration, we gave it a full five stars. Warm, dark and raw – it’ll be the perfect soundtrack to a chilly February evening when Los Angeles-based Holter returns to London for a show at Oval Space on Monday 15 February.

Madrid quartet Hinds are a brilliantly entertaining mash-up of Spector-ish pop, post-riot grrrl and ramshackle, jangling indiepop. Upbeat, melody-heavy but still achingly cool, they’re impossible not to love. See them at KOKO on Thursday 18 February.

Polica dropped this video – a Sesame Street-inspired commentary on police brutality – for new song Wedding, earlier this month. It comes ahead of new album, United Crushers, due out on 25 March. It’s an eerie affair but somehow hopeful, as usual their signature synth sound lifts even the bleakest moments. Expect plenty from their upcoming third record when they play at the Village Underground on Monday 15 February.
