Gigs Of The Week
We were super impressed by Pumarosa when we saw them at St John at Hackney as part of Visions festival, back in July. With just a couple of singles to their name, they filled the church with their dramatic, expansive sound. Singer Isabel Munoz-Newsome – a twirling Kate Bush-type character – leads her band through fits of dance-rock intrigue. They’re playing at the Village Underground on Monday 24 October.
If nothing else, The Veils have incredible references and endorsements; David Lynch and Tim Burton are fans and have used their music in their films (in fact, frontman Finn Andrews is rumoured to be appearing in the upcoming Twin Peaks reboot), while Rough Trade’s head honcho Geoff Travis has described Andrews as “a young but maturing real artist in the vein of Nick Caveand David Bowie.” So no pressure then, Finn…The band released their fifth album a couple of months ago, and it represented a marked change in direction. A new clarity steeped in plenty of Lynch-ish sinister melodrama. Catch them at KOKO on Tuesday 25 October.
The wonderful Brandt Brauer Frick return to London this week, with a show at Oslo on Tuesday 25 October ahead of the release of their new album, Joy. The classically trained ensemble make fizzing electro music that’s endlessly fascinating in its arrangements and combination of instruments. For the first time, the Berlin-based group are touring with a lead singer, Canadian Beaver Sheppard, perhaps signalling a move away from the ‘classical boys do techno’ label?
Announcement Of The Week
The Pretenders have announced a show at the Royal Albert Hall. The announcement coincides with the release of their new album, Alone – their first for over eight years – which saw Chrissie Hynde join forces with The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, who played the role of producer and multi-instrumentalist on the record. The one-off show is scheduled for 10 April 2017.
