London Gigs

London Gigs: 28 March – 3 April 2016

Announcement Of The Week

Julia Holter is set to move into the major league this autumn, with the announcement of a headline tour, which includes a show at Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Following the release last year of her fourth album Have You In My Wilderness, she’s been busy playing across the world. That hard work will pay off in the form of her biggest ever show, on 14 November.

Gigs Of The Week

Swans frontman Michael Gira will perform as part of Art Assembly’s Saisonscape: New Life, a triple bill exploring ideas of growth, rebirth and renewal, at the Barbican on Wednesday 30 March. A departure from the ear-splitting sounds of his band, Gira’s set of stripped back, reworked versions of back catalogue – both with Swans and solo – promises “lilting blues guitars and deep, crooning vocals”. He’ll be joined by Sonic Youth founder Thurston Moore and Laura Cannell.

If you’re after something more raucous, you could do worse than checking out Primal Scream, who will be supported by Bo Ningen at London Palladium on Friday 1 April. Expect lots from their recent record, Chaosmosis – their 11th studio album.

XL signing Låpsley brings her recently-released debut, Long Way Home, to Heaven on Wednesday. Despite the Scandi-sounding name, 19-year-old Holly Lapsley comes all the way from Merseyside, where she honed her songwriting and producing skills in her bedroom. She’s had a busy few years, having been long-listed for the BBC Sound of 2015 and pulling together her album. A restless record that flits between soulful pop and euphoric vocal pitch-shifts, it’s sure to sound impressive under the arches at Charing Cross.
