London Gigs: 29 February-6 March 2016

Announcement Of The Week

At the end of last year, The Chills surprised many with the release of Silver Bullets, their first album for nearly two decades. A gem of a come-back, it was as hooky and melody-driven as ever, a firm reminder of their position as founders of their breed of off-kilter indie rock. Now they’ve announced a show at KOKO, on 8 June.

Gigs Of The Week

Some of the country’s best indie labels will show off their wears during Label Mates – a nine-day, multi-venue festival in Hackney. Bella Union, Fire Records, Heavenly, PNKSLM, Trouble In Mind and Fortuna Pop! are among the labels taking over Moth Club, The Victoria, Shacklewell Arms, Epic Dalston and The Waiting Room from 4-13 March. You’ll be able to catch the likes of Gwenno, The Black Tambourines, The Spook School, Pere Ubu, Tom Cohen, Two White Cranes, Holy Wave and Primitive Parts.

Last week, Eagulls announced details of their upcoming, second album. Ullages – the follow-up to their 2014 debut – is set for release on 13 May. Ahead of that, they shared a track from it, My Life In Rewind, a slice of brilliantly bratty post-punk. Catch them at Oslo, on Wednesday 2 March.

Could there be a more satisfying Sunday than an evening spent at the beautifully ornate Islington Assembly Hall, listening to the gorgeously embittered folk of Thea Gilmore. With some 14 albums under her belt at the age of 36, ranging in scope from the personal to the political, it’s fair to say she’s prolific, and her shows usually dip deep into her back catalogue. See her on Sunday 6 March.
