Philip Glass and Laurie Anderson perform together at the Barbican in May
Announcement Of The Week
Philip Glass and Laurie Anderson are set to perform together for the first time outside America, as two of music’s greatest minds come together for a special show at the Barbican this spring. Composer Glass, who celebrates his 80th birthday this week, has collaborated with Anderson over the years but this show, American Style, is the first of its kind. First performed in 2015, it sees the pair trading songs and improvising. It includes spoken word performances, amongst these words of their friends, including Leonard Cohen, Allen Ginsberg and Lou Reed, with plenty of Anderson’s visual work to help curate the evening, on 17 May.
Gigs Of The Week
The Roundhouse’s annual festival, In The Round, is in full swing. The all-seated shows bring an unusually intimate feel to the looming Camden venue, for this week’s eclectic line-up, which includes Ghetts, Orchestra Baobab, Shusheela Raman and The Tiger Lillies. However the highlights will surely be an outing from Julian Cope on Friday 4 February, and a joint-headline show from Martha Wainwright and Ed Harcourt, who’ll each play a solo set before coming together for a one-off collaboration, on Thursday 2 February.
If a voice like Laura Mvula‘s was made for the Union Chapel, her second album, The Dreaming Room – released last year – was written for it. She plays at the stunning Islington venue on Friday 3 February, as a fundraiser for Stand Up To Cancer, with support from London Contemporary Voices, The Beach and Passport To Stockholm.
Black Sabbath‘s last ever tour stops in town this week, with Ozzy and co playing at the 02 Arena as their bid adieu to fans. Catch the, on Tuesday 31 January.
