News Of The Week
End of The Road festival made its first line-up announcement this week, and it’s already achingly brilliant.
Joanna Newsom, Bat For Lashes, Animal Collective, Cat Power, Field Music, GOAT, M Ward, Meilyr Jones, Jeffrey Lewis and Devendra Banhart are on the cards, with plenty more to be added before it kicks off on 2 September.
Gigs Of The Week
There seems to be no stopping Tame Impala at the moment. Last month they were in the spotlight following the release of Rhianna’s new album, which featured an unlikely cover of their track New Person, Same Old Mistakes – dubbed Same Ol’ Mistakes. Then they were nominated for the Australian version of the Brit Awards for their album, Currents, and this week they’re set to play two shows at Alexandra Palace, on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 February. Phew!
Kitty, Daisy and Lewis may not be the child protégés who blew audiences away with their rockabilly/blues jams when they were barely into their teens, but the siblings are still an exciting live proposition, even at the grand old age of 20-something. An explosion of jazz, R&B, ska, country, rock ‘n’ roll, blues… what’s not to like? See them at KOKO on Thursday 11 February.
Field Music have carved such a unique sound over more than a decade as a band that they’re almost identifiable from just one industrial, clanking off-chord. Their vocals and wonky choruses keep them endlessly fascinating. Their sixth album, Commontime, was released on Friday, so expect plenty from that at their show at Rough Trade East on Wednesday 10 February, ahead of a show at Islington Assembly Hall on 18 March.
