With deft touches from British soul legend Omar, and guitar and percussion by long-time Cape Verdean collaborators Kim Alves and Zé Luis Nascimento, Lovely Difficult is Mayra Andrade’s fourth album. “I decided I wanted to make a poppier album,” Havana-born Mayra says. She’s succeeded, for it is as poppy as it is lovely.
Recorded in Brighton, Lovely Difficult is a multilingual collection that beguiles. “It’s a varied, personal album. I’m a woman of my times, affected by so many influences. I’ve never written or sung in so many languages,” she says. With songs penned in Cape-Verdean Creole, Portuguese, French and English, it’s a statement of worldliness in musical form.
