If High Ball Stepper is what we’re about to get on Jack White’s upcoming album Lazaretto, then this could quite possibly end up ranking as one of the best albums of the year (already). Dirty blues, stripped down rock, some piano parts even, and loads and loads of fuzzy guitar riffing over some really odd howling and wailing noises is how this track begins and ends. Actually, whether the ‘howling’ noises are even human at all is questionable because it’s just as likely they are synth parts or screaming solo guitar.
Either way, that’s about as close as it gets to vocals since the entire track has no singing whatsoever, and yet, manages to be an absolute belter that will make you want to listen to it over and over again. And let’s face it, only is Jack White capable of doing that. The official video is worth mentioning too – close up shots of bouncing, shape-shifting paint that is propelled by the vibrations emanating from a speaker cabinet. High Ball Stepper isn’t an official single in itself, though, so consider it just a teaser for the time being. It certainly does the job.
