You can just as easily picture Beth Ditto from Gossip wailing over La Roux’s new song Let Me Down Gently as you can vocalist Elly Jackson – but either way this track marks a fine and much, much welcomed return from the UK synth-pop masters.
Believe it or not, it’s been five long years since Bulletproof blew everyone away and while this first taste from the forthcoming album is on par with La Roux’s 2009 hit single, there is a much mellower, gloomier and sadder tone to Let Me Down Gently. First of all, it’s clearly a breakup song and the fact that Jackson sings in such warm drawn-out tones just makes the track all the more depressing. In a good way, however. So you can choose to cry over it, or you can choose to shake your booty because the vintage ‘80s synths are back in a major way, including some sexy sax solos in the second half of the song.
La Roux’s new album, titled Trouble In Paradise, is dropping on July 7 and that’s not the only good news – Jackson and co. are also doing a major UK tour in November. Double yes.
