Track Of The Day: Prince – FALLINLOVE2NITE

This collaboration clearly must have come together after Prince’s guest appearance alongside Zooey Deschanel on The New Girl this year, which is probably why it sounds like a mismatched, thrown-together-at-the-last-minute pairing. It might be sacrilege to call anything Prince touches ‘cheesy’ but in this instance, an exception must be made. Because (even minus its cheesy title), FALLINLOVE2NITE is pure cheese. Hot melted stretchy cheese.

Currently it isn’t clear whether the track is set to appear on Prince’s forthcoming album with 3RDEYEGIRL, PlectrumElectrum, and let’s hope it doesn’t, because despite its dance-floor-friendly EDM-infused poppiness, at best it sounds like a B-side off an old Prince album, circa sometime in the ‘80s, and at worst, like something Jennifer Lopez released in 2001.

Making FALLINLOVE2NITE even more awkward is Deschenel’s contribution. With all due respect – because this is one actress who actually can sing and possesses quite a deep, rich voice when given the right song – her voice neither complements nor fits in any way with Prince’s vocals, and the result just sounds contrived. In the lead up to the release of PlectrumElectrum, let’s cross our fingers the rest of the songs are above and beyond FALLINLOVE2NITE. Prince has done and can do much better than this.
